NAVHDA - ILLOWA ~ Who We Are

The North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) is a legally recognized non-profit organization dedicated to fostering, improving, promoting and protecting the versatile hunting dog in North America. Underlying these aims is the desire to serve the interests of game conservation, the prevention of cruelty to animals, and good sportsmanship, by encouraging hunters to use dogs that are well-trained in work before and after the shot, on land and in the water.

Purposes

  1. To educate all interested persons in the techniques of training versatile hunting dogs, to conduct tests of versatile hunting dog breeds in North America and maintain records of such tests for all interested persons and to promote selective breeding and population control of versatile hunting dog breeds.
  2. To prevent cruelty to animals by the use of properly trained hunting dogs.
  3. No substantial part of the activities of the corporation shall consist of carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation and the corporation shall not intervene in any political campaign.
  4. The corporation shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, sex, religion, or any legally proscribed classification, in its programs, activities, or employment practices.

2019 Youth Pheasant Hunt - Plans are already underway for the 2019 Youth Pheasant Hunt. It will once again be held at the Henke-Benson Farm, 10447 55th Street, Wapello. October 19, 2019, 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Please visit the chapter calendar for the registration and liability waiver forms.

Meet at Henke/Benson Farm, 6442 114th Ave, Wapello, IA  REMEMBER the Wapello Iowa River Bridge is close for replacement.  See detour directions.  Contact Jeff, 563-299-4435 no later than Thursday, August 8th to order birds.  We will check on prices for quail, chukar and pheasant.  Ducks may require special order so contact Jeff as soon as you know you will need them.

Training YOUR Versatile Hunting Dog - Start to Finish

Wapello, IA

Whether you are new to training a Versatile Hunting Dog or an old hand at the game, there is always something to learn.  Interests may vary from upland to waterfowl to blood tracking . . . We will have something to interest you.

Presenter:  Jonathan Paranjothy will cover all aspects of field and water training.

Presenter:  Jeff Henke will talk about the introduction to Blood tracking.

Presenter:  Lori Tyler will speak to the advantages of positive clicker training.

Presenter:  Jennifer Faynaardt will coach us on grooming ears and nails.

REGISTRATION:  $25.00  includes both days.

BIRDS:  Will be available for pre-order purchase. 

Quail $5.50  Chukar $8.00  Pheasant $12.00  Ducks $15.00

FOOD:  All meals will be cooked on site both days at your own expense.

2019 Youth Pheasant Hunt

The ILLOWA NAVHDA Youth Pheasant Hunt will provide an opportunity for 12 area youth, ages 12-15, who have completed the Hunter Safety Course, the opportunity to hunt rooster pheasants over trained versatile hunting dogs on opening day of the youth pheasant season.

The youth will receive a brief review of hunting safety and rules followed by gun safety and trapshooting.  Participants will rotate between sessions that include dog handling, wildlife identification, a field hunt and more.  All guns, ammo, blaze orange, eye/ear protection, and food will be provided. 

There is NO COST for this program thanks to NAVHDA, Louisa County Pheasant & Quail Forever and generous donations from other area sponsors.
